American Legion Joseph E. Zaloga
Located in: Albany | New York
In 1945, a group of veterans from WWII decided to make something called The Post, which was the first American Legion Post, to honour a deceased comrade from the Arbor Hill community. The deceased veterans' names were put in a hat and one drawn in order to see who the Legion would be named in honour of. There was a room donated to the cause. For several years, The Post met there--until 1959, when they decided to have their own home. In 1962, after much renovating and planning, The Post was opened and a major success amongst other veterans. Since then, The Post has over 1000 members, and have donated over $120,000 to troops, sent food packages, and other care supplies to those fighting. The original members of The Post, hailed in the name of Joseph E. Zaloga, are very much honoured and remembered and celebrated. The weekly bingo nights that turn The Post into a bingo hall raise an incredible amount of money to sustain both the building and the cause.
